A Riddle?

I got a text message from a friend last weekend, with a riddle. She also sent it to another couple of friends I was having lunch with at the time. We passed it on to everyone we know, having spent half the afternoon trying to work it out. This is what it said:

A RIDDLE THAT'LL KILL YOUR BRAIN! This is going to make you so MAD! There are three words in the English language that end in 'gry'. ONE is angry and the other is hungry. EveryONE knows what the third ONE means and what it stands for. EveryONE uses them everyday, and if you've listened very carefully, I've given you the third word. What is it? Send this to five people and the answer will pop up on the screen automatically.

(It doesn't of course!) We tried everything, we read it out loud, so we could 'listen very carefully', we wrote down every possible letter we could think of that might come before 'gry' to see if that would trigger the solution. We thought about the number ONE. We wondered if it might have something to do with the strange 'one is ... and the other is ...' while talking about three things. My daughter put a big sign up on the mirror, so we would think about it often.

Still none the wiser, I finally gave up earlier today and had a look online.

The answer was very interesting!

That is interesting - not least because I'd never realised there were only two familiar words ending in gry. I might try this on the Teens later!

Aargh, that's so annoying. I didn't want to look at the answer, but couldn't help myself! My kids will love this.

No, I had no idea either, Karen!

I didn't get chance to look at the site where I found the answer, but think there might be some more interesting stuff on there.

Hope the Teens enjoy it. Eldest Daughter loved it and wrote all the possible answers down to text to everyone she sent the original to, while Youngest daughter is disappointed that there is 'no proper answer'!

I know, Maddie!

It drove me nuts for a week, then drove me nuts when I read the 'answer'!

I did think about keeping the link for a few days, because I hate being told the answer to riddles. But having found it, I didn't think it was fair not to say so, especially as it's so ambiguous ...

We have just spent a week discounting 'agree' as the answer, because it isn't spelt right!

Have fun with the kids!

Me too, Helen!

I'm not sure whether it hurt more before or after I discovered the answer!
